Fall and all its glory

29 Sep

Antiques 025The trees softly rustle in the cool breeze.  Hints of pumpkin spice  waife through the crisp air, gentil clues awaking my senses to the wonderful news that fall has arrived.  Fall is all about getting cozy, entertaining with friends, football, and preparing for the hibernation of winter.  Here are some great tips to make your home warm and welcoming this fall.

Scent:  This is the first thing I think of when the leaves begin to change.  There are so many scents associated with fall.  Warm vanilla, pumpkin spice, chai latte, autumn leaves…and the list goes on.  Glade and Yankee offer several seasonal scents in candle, plug-in, and oil varieties.  However, these can sometimes become expensive.  Here are some cheap all natural ways to get your home smelling sweet this season:

  • Add to a pot of water any combination of allspice, cloves, orange peel, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract and fresh ginger, and simmer the mixture slowly on the stove.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar in a tin pie pan and burn it slowly on the stove top over very low temperature or very low flame.
  • To fill your living room with a spicy aroma, throw orange or tangerine peels, pinecones or potpourri into your fire.

Color: Red leaves, orange pumpkins, and blue skies.  Isn’t fall beautiful!  Here are a few ways to bring those colors home:

  • Mums are a fairly inexpensive way to add a punch of fall to your garden or porch before winter rears it’s dreary head.  Line your porch stairs with alternating colors or buy several sizes in the same color.
  • Adorn your door with a festive welcome sign or mat.  To get ideas visit your local craft store.  Something as simple as a sunflower swag on the door will definitely create the welcome fall look.

Food and drink: as the seasons change so do our taste buds.  Hearty sweet potatoes, cranberries, apples, and figs are in season throughout fall.  Eating fruits and vegetables that are local and in season is a great way to stay healthy and help the environment.  Here are some ways to enjoy the harvest of fall:

  • Have friends over for a dinner of comfort food and a healthy glass of vino (fall wines).
  • Prepare an autumn recipe  favorite and easy crowd pleaser, chili.  Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream, and crusty bread.  Yum!  (Chili Recipe)
  • Bake with pumpkin…cakes, cookies, pies, anything will do (pumpkin bread)
  • Sprinkle ground cinnamon or pumpkin spice over coffee grounds before brewing.  Ahh, fall.

Whatever you do, invite fall into your home this season and enjoy it while it lasts!
